Making the money go round
Progress is measured by the speed at which we destroy the conditions that sustain life. Governments are deemed to succeed or fail by how well they make money go round, regardless of whether it serves any useful purpose… GDP is a measure of economic activity, not standard of living.
George Monbiot on growth today. He also mentions Lord Turner, who “brought the consumer society’s most subversive observation into the mainstream” when he said increased growth did not necessarily mean increased welfare.
I agree, and helping to move that thought into the mainstream is the very reason for this site.
